Renaissance by Jane DeDecker
Figurative Bronze 30x24x24" ed/21
Renaissance, or by definition “rebirth,” mystifies me conceptually, in that the act of being reborn can only be spiritual or ethereal. I have a yearning for this particular thought in my life at this time. This piece speaks about the beauty of emergence, the baptism of change, and the acceptance of a higher transcendence. Botticelli describes this so beautifully in his fresco The Birth of Venus. My family and I were traveling in Florence shortly after this fresco had been cleaned and its radiance has been haunting me since. Only until now have I been moved to recreate sculpturally the beauty of the shell as a vessel with its rhythms created by time -- a figure holding dear the willingness to accept the virtues of a higher realm.
