His award-winning work is now collected across the U.S. and overseas. Scott’s varied career in the arts has included graphic design & illustration, stained glass design & painting, children’s book writing & illustration, and nearly ten years as an illustrator/designer for Hallmark Cards, Inc. Most recently, in addition to his fine art painting, Scott has been pursuing work in the public art arena with the goal of inclusivity and community building. Scott and his wife, Mollie, both received Bachelor of Fine Art degrees in painting from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1982, and 1989, respectively. They have had five children together, and maintain their home and studios in downtown Loveland, Colorado. “I view art as communication. But it’s a bit of a sneaky form of communication in that it has the ability to get around the gatekeeper in our heads and go right to the heart. I like the fact that art can touch our emotions, and I hope to use this capability of art to help create a culture of life and relational connection among people. I continue to be energized about the idea of including non-artists in the enterprise of art making. I have developed an inclusive process in which any person can participate, including very young children, as well as people with mental or physical disabilities. (Skilled painters are also welcome!) This unique process results in murals that have the appearance of a mosaic, with individuals painting numbered tiles, each bearing a piece of the larger picture. Enabling actual hands-on community participation requires some planning and a different kind of energy than does working solo. In order to involve a high concentration of participants it may be necessary for me to set up a booth at a festival or at other outdoor events in your city. Alternatively, I could go into the school system and work with the staff to create a special project for students. I prefer to consult with local representatives to gain an understanding of what would be an appropriate approach to enlisting local participation in these community projects. Of course, I am more than willing to design and execute a mural using a conventional approach as an individual artist if that is the best solution for your situation. Either way, my aim is to hit the bulls-eye for your committee, and to create an enduring public art piece that the general public will enjoy.”
